United States Senator Adam Schiff of California Urges a Vote for Democrat Richard Barrera for Superintendent of Public Instruction

(San Diego) United States Senator Adam Schiff of California has endorsed Democrat Richard Barrera to be the state’s next Superintendent of Public Instruction.

“Richard Barrera is exactly the kind of leader California needs at the helm of our public education system,” says Senator Schiff. “His track record of success on behalf of students in San Diego is unmatched. He has stood up time and again to oppose the Trump administration’s assault on both our schools and our students from immigrant families. If California is to continue to lead the nation in the pursuit of innovation and prosperity, world class public schools must be at the forefront. Richard Barrera will lead that work as Superintendent of Public Instruction and I am pleased to endorse him.”

“Senator Schiff is one of our nation’s leading voices for a government that works for all people,” says Barrera. “He has tirelessly stood up against the Trump administration’s reckless economic policies, which have created misery for Californians at both the gas pump and the grocery store. He has also condemned Trump’s assault on public education and the weaponization of ICE against families. I look forward to having him as a partner in Washington D.C. and here at home in ensuring that our state remains welcoming, affordable, and safe for every Californian.”

As President of the San Diego Unified School District, where he has served on the Board of Trustees for nearly eighteen years, Richard Barrera led a reform movement that transformed San Diego Unified, the state’s second largest district and one of its most diverse, from a district in crisis into a model of success whose students rank first in the nation in reading and math among large urban school districts.  Among large California districts, San Diego students also rank number one in graduation rates and college and career readiness.

At the same time, Barrera has acted to ensure that students are free from discrimination, regardless of their immigration status, race, economic background, disability, or gender identity. He has also prioritized investment in front line educators and spearheaded the development of affordable housing for teachers and classified staff on under-utilized school district properties.

Senator Schiff joins a growing list of prominent Democratic leaders in urging a vote for Barrera in November’s election, including  California’s senior United States senator Alex Padilla, Congressman Juan Vargas, and California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon.
