California Democratic Party Endorses Richard Barrera

“Richard Barrera Embodies Democratic Values”

(San Diego) Richard Barrera is the officially endorsed candidate of the California Democratic Party in the race for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Barrera, who currently serves as President of the San Diego Unified School District Board of Trustees, outpaced a large field of other Democratic candidates in the June primary to advance to November’s general election.

Democratic Party Chair, Rusty Hicks praised Barrera’s commitment to the ideals of the Democratic Party. “The California Democratic Party is proud to endorse Richard Barrera for Superintendent of Public Instruction. For the past two decades, he’s been a leader in the San Diego Unified School District, working to ensure every public school is fully funded, well-equipped, and safe for students and faculty. He’s also stood up against Trump and the Republicans’ cruel immigration policies and the decimation of the Department of Education. Richard Barrera embodies Democratic values, and we look forward to helping elect him as Superintendent of Public Instruction in November.” 

Richard Barrera said, “As a lifelong Democrat, I could not be more proud to have the support of the California Democratic Party. For almost twenty years, I have led a reform movement at the San Diego Unified School District that took us from being a district in crisis to one that ranks first in the nation in reading and math among large urban school districts. It’s always been about putting values first – commitment and respect for our students, support for our educators and a belief in their expertise, and a partnership with the community that is based on inclusiveness. With the help of the California Democratic Party, I’m ready to share that success with school districts throughout California as State Superintendent.”

Barrera’s opponent is a MAGA Republican Trump supporter. In contrast, Barrera has fought back as the Trump administration has slashed critical education funds and laid waste to the federal Department of Education. Barrera has also forcefully opposed the Republican reign of terror by ICE, which includes targeting immigrant parents when they drop their children off at school.

“I have fought the Trump agenda in San Diego and I pledge that as State Superintendent I will take the fight statewide and to the nation’s capitol,” says Barrera.

The Democratic Party endorsement is the latest in a post-primary unification of support behind Barrera, including Democratic leaders such as United States Senator Alex Padilla and California Assembly Speaker Emeritus Anthony Rendon.
