Statement of Richard Barrera on His Win in the June 2 Primary

“A Sharp Contrast on the Future of California’s Schools”

(San Diego) Democrat Richard Barrera holds a commanding lead over his Democratic rivals in the vote count for the June 2 Primary Election for State Superintendent of Public Instruction, making him the clear Democratic front runner for a spot in November’s General Election.

“I am honored to have emerged from a large field of extremely dedicated and qualified candidates to move forward to November. The General Election will offer voters a sharp contrast between my vision of uniting all Californians for the benefit of students versus an approach that seeks to divide us.”

“I have traveled up and down the state listening to parents, students, educators, and community members about what they want from our state’s public education system. They are clearly hungry for the kind of change I achieved during my almost two decades on the Board of Trustees of San Diego Unified School District, where we went from being a district in crisis to one that leads the nation in Reading, Math, and preparing students for college and career. This success was the result of a collective vision of excellent schools shared by a diverse community coalition that I brought together.”

“There is broad agreement among Californians that schools should be safe, supportive places for all students which prepare them for future success. I look forward to sharing San Diego’s successful strategies with every district in the state.”
