JACKIE GOLDBERG ENDORSES RICHARD BARRERA
VISIONARY LOS ANGELES EDUCATION LEADER JACKIE GOLDBERG ENDORSES RICHARD BARRERA FOR SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
Long term progressive education leader Jackie Goldberg is backing Richard Barrera to be the next California Superintendent of Public Instruction. Goldberg, who served for many years on the Los Angeles Unified School Board, where her tenure included several terms as board president; the Los Angeles City Council; and in the California State Assembly, where she chaired the Education Committee, says
“Barrera has the vision, the commitment, and the track record we need in our state’s top education position. He is by far the best choice in this race.”
Los Angeles education leader Jackie Goldberg has long led the fight for adequate funding for public schools.
Goldberg continues, “When I was elected to the State Assembly, my years of experience on the front lines of public education as a 20-year educator and a local school board member were invaluable to helping me craft solutions to the challenges facing our schools that were both aspirational and practical. Richard’s nearly eighteen years as a school board member in San Diego, California’s second largest and highly diverse district, combined with his role as a senior advisor to our current State Superintendent, make him uniquely qualified to pursue and achieve success for students, teachers, and families. Due to his leadership, San Diego schools are safe and supportive spaces and their students lead the nation in academic achievement. We need more of that spirit at the state level.”
In two separate stretches at LAUSD, Goldberg became known for empowering teachers and parents, fighting attempts to privatize public schools, prioritizing students from poor and marginalized families, and advocating for taxpayer investment in safe, modern school facilities. As a leader in the State Assembly, she authored bills to advance school construction and include teachers in the textbook selection process. She has long advocated for adequate funding for public education. “California is a rich state; it is unacceptable that our schools are near the bottom in terms of state spending on students,” says Goldberg.
“I am beyond honored to have the support of Jackie Goldberg, an icon of the progressive education movement and a visionary who believes schools can and should lift up every student, every family, and every community,” says Barrera.””
